What Is Dry Eye Disease?

Healthy tears do much more than keep your eyes comfortable. They protect the surface of your eyes, keep your vision clear, and help wash away dust and debris.

Dry eye develops when your eyes don't produce enough tears or when your tears evaporate too quickly. In many cases, the tiny meibomian glands along your eyelids become blocked or stop producing enough healthy oil. Without that protective oil layer, tears evaporate more quickly, leaving your eyes feeling dry, irritated, and uncomfortable.
